# David Chieze: Rising French Perfumer Redefining Niche Fragrance
## From Chemistry Lab to Creative Studio: A Modern Perfumer's Path
David Chieze represents a new generation of French perfumers who blend scientific precision with artistic vision. His journey began unconventionally at seventeen when he discovered perfumery as a profession and decided to pursue it with unwavering dedication. Starting as a fragrance advisor at L'Artisan Parfumeur, Chieze spent his after-hours deconstructing and reconstructing classic scents like rose and muguet, teaching himself the fundamentals of fragrance composition.
His chemistry background provides the technical foundation for his creative work, but it was his mentorship with renowned perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour that truly shaped his artistic development. After a year of intensive learning, Duchaufour introduced him to Mark Buxton, with whom Chieze found immediate creative synergy. This partnership led to his current role at LUZI, a family-owned Swiss fragrance company, where he creates new scents alongside Buxton in their Paris office.
Chieze's creative philosophy centers on finding harmony through contrasts, a principle he observes in nature. He approaches fragrance creation through textural associations, often describing scents as smooth, rough, or vibrant. This unique perspective allows him to pair seemingly opposing notes to create balanced, harmonious compositions. His inspiration comes from personal memories, travel experiences, and the authentic scents of different cultures, translating these sensory experiences into his fragrances.
## Signature Creations and Growing Recognition
Despite being relatively new to the industry, Chieze has already created an impressive portfolio of fragrances for over 20 niche brands, including Electimuss, Kajal, Swiss Arabian, and Thomas de Monaco. His talent has been recognized through several prestigious awards, including a nomination for the Art and Olfaction Award in Berlin for his creation Anti Anti, and winning the ACS International Perfumers Contest "Amethyst" with Circle & Life.
One of his most celebrated creations is [Astrum Nova](/perfume/electimuss-astrum-nova) for Electimuss, which perfectly demonstrates his philosophy of harmonious contrasts. The fragrance opens with a vibrant burst of juicy [mango](/note/mango) and bright citrus notes, then transforms into a sophisticated base of precious [oud](/note/oud), [oakmoss](/note/oakmoss), and warm [vanilla](/note/vanilla). This composition showcases his ability to balance tropical fruitiness with deep, woody complexity, creating what he describes as "modern opulence."
Chieze's work is characterized by his particular fondness for [rose](/note/rose), which he appreciates for its multifaceted nature and endless creative possibilities. His fragrances often feature unexpected textural elements and memorable contrasts that reflect his belief that perfume is ultimately a quest for harmony. As he continues to collaborate with innovative niche brands and develop his distinctive style, Chieze is establishing himself as a significant voice in contemporary perfumery, contributing to the evolution of modern fragrance creation through his emphasis on textural complexity and balanced contrasts.
