# Euan McCall: Scottish Perfumery Pioneer & Jorum Studio Founder

## From Highland Inspiration to Global Recognition

Euan McCall stands as a pioneering figure in contemporary perfumery, having single-handedly established Scotland as a notable presence in the global fragrance industry. His journey began in childhood, surrounded by the horticultural business of his grandparents and inspired by his grandmother's love for perfume. A formative trip to Grasse at age eight solidified his ambition to pursue perfumery, though finding a clear career path in Scotland proved challenging.

McCall's self-directed approach to learning perfumery involved working with as many perfumers as possible, including informal training with a Highland-based perfumer and early mentorship from Dr. George Dodd, an Irish perfumer and biochemist. In 2009, he founded Jorum Laboratories, offering freelance formulation and consulting services to international clients. After a decade of experience working with brands like Neandertal and Senyokô, McCall co-founded Jorum Studio in 2019 with partner Chloe Mullen.

His creative philosophy centers on creating new olfactory landscapes using noble materials in innovative ways. McCall describes his fragrances as "dreams brought to life through the combination of aromatic materials," emphasizing his desire to move people and bring intangible joy. His approach is deliberately unhurried and analytical, involving extensive research, moodboarding, and a lengthy creative process that allows concepts to develop naturally.

## Scottish Odyssey: Capturing Wild Beauty in Fragrance

McCall's signature collection, Scottish Odyssey, exemplifies his contemporary impressionist approach to fragrance creation. Each composition draws inspiration from specific Scottish locations and folklore, translating the wild beauty of the Highland landscape into olfactory experiences. [Firewater](/perfume/jorum-studio-firewater) captures the essence of dancing around a beach bonfire at Corryvreckan Whirlpool, combining smoky peat with citrus char and marine elements like sugar kelp.

Gorseland presents a sun-blazed interpretation of Edinburgh's Salisbury Crags, where neon gold gorse blooms emerge from concrete. The fragrance opens with bright apple and herbal chamomile, developing into a complex array of yellow florals and unique botanicals like pineappleweed and elderflower. Meanwhile, [Healing Berry](/perfume/jorum-studio-healing-berry) explores the Valley of Strathmore through wild Scottish berries, creating a tannin-sweet concoction that balances healing and harm.

McCall's technical mastery shines in compositions like [Spiritcask](/perfume/jorum-studio-spiritcask), which evokes Glasgow's Queen's Dock through boozy notes of whisky lactone, cognac, and rum absolute, balanced with vanilla and oakwood. His ability to incorporate rare ingredients like beardtongue, zdravetz, and kush demonstrates his commitment to using the finest raw materials while pushing creative boundaries.

Jorum Studio's entirely in-house production approach, from formulation to manufacturing, reflects McCall's artisanal philosophy. His work has established Scotland as a serious player in niche perfumery, with the brand expanding internationally while maintaining its authentic Scottish identity and commitment to innovative, high-quality fragrance creation.
